iPad 2 Jailbreak Arrives Early

The long awaited JailbreakMe 3.0 for the iPad 2 was leaked on Saturday, but not by Comex, the hacker who has been working on the new jailbreak for several weeks now. On June 11, Comex hinted that he had discovered a new  exploit when he published a picture of a ski run labeled “PDF” on jailbreakme.com.  The hacker later confirmed that he was working on an iPad 2 jailbreak  after he posted a long explanation via  Twitlonger.

On Saturday morning a private beta tester released a YouTube video and download link for an iOS 4.3 jailbreak, and several tech blogs  posted images showing Cydia 1.1.2 running on the iPad 2.

This is not the official version of JailbreakMe 3.0 by Comex , but if you want to take the leap early, here’s how to jailbreak your iPad 2  courtesy of Redmond Pie:

Step 1: Launch Mobile Safari and navigate over to the URL as shown in the video (link below).

Step 2: Once you’ve done that, Safari should automatically close, that’s completely normal. You should now see a Cydia icon on your Home Screen, with a progress bar, much like any other official app while it’s downloading.

Step 3: Once the Cydia icon disappears, reboot your device. Once it powers back up, which could take a little bit longer than usual, your iPad 2 should be jailbroken.

Remember this is unofficial so back up your iPad 2 before doing anything, and follow the video, links and instructions at your own risk.

UPDATE: Here’s Comex’s response to the leak via Twitter:

“Congratulations, some moron used a dictionary attack(?) to leak a buggy version and put me on a useless time limit.”

Let’s hope the time limit isn’t too short… hasn’t been in the past but could always change. Everyone use TinyUmbrella and save 4.3.3.”

“I also don’t know if the version that got leaked is full of debug printfs or something, since people were saying it delays bootup.”
